When My Child Asks What of Palestine?
by Olivia Buker

When My Child Asks What of Palestine?

What about the Muslims?

Israeli occupation.

What of Palestine?

My small child looks for answers,

A trade center crumbled,

A country's despair.

A boy his age in the street cursing America.

What of Palestine?

His age denies access to words like

"Geneva convention"

"terrorism supported by a Saudi exile"

He only sees a boy his age happy and our loss.

But what of Palestine?

I tell him a story of a people,

A people much like our Native people,

Who were pushed off their land,

Made to walk, leaving a trail of tears.

Our shame.

I say Palestine cries like our Indians cried,

Colonization on simple terms,

I tell him I pray for our families,

I pray for Palestine.
